New York State has negotiated a deal with the federal government over issuing new, more secure state IDs and driver's licenses. The state will implement a system approved by the Department of Homeland Security that will effectively create three types of licenses. The first will be a license that has the level of security and identification process similar to a U.S. passport, aimed at making travel between the U.S. and Canada more fluid for New York residents.

07/01/2007: New Hampshire Repeals Parental Notification Law

A law that would require parental notification before a minor could receive an abortion has been repealed in the state of New Hampshire. The legislation authorizing the repeal was signed Friday by the governor and goes into effect immediately.

06/21/2007: New Zealand Refuses to Acknowledge 4Real Wheaton

New Zealand's Registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages is preventing a couple from naming their child 4Real, saying that numerals are not allowed in a legal name. Pat and Sheena Wheaton came up with the name after an ultrasound. The Registry says that exceptions to naming are made on a case-by-case basis, and it would give this particular case a fair hearing.
