Madeleine L'Engle, a prolific author best known for A Wrinkle in Time, passed away at age 88 in Litchfield, CT on Thursday. L'Engle was a Newbery medal winner for A Wrinkle in Time and was awarded a National Humanities Medal in 2004.

Alfred Peet, who founded Peet's Coffee & Tea Inc. in 1966, died this week at age 87. Peet was a pioneer in bringing quality dark roasts to the American general public. The first location opened at Walnut and Vine in Berkeley, CA in 1966. Peet's specialty coffees was sold at its retail locations (the second opened in 1971 in Menlo Park,) and soon was also in local fine dining restaurants. It was also Peet's roast that was served at the first Starbucks that opened in Pike Place Market in Seattle, WA in 1971.

The writer of the lyrics to Unchained Melody, Hy Zaret, died on Monday at age 99. The song he is most famous for was nominated for an Academy Award in 1955 for the movie Unchained. The tune was popularized by the Righteous Brothers version in 1965, though there are at least 300 other recordings of the song by various artists.
