12/16/2007: Pats Revenge Scenario Spoiled by Weather

16:00:00 - Sports Posted by Andrew http://www.reayrx.com/

A nor'easter, relatively mild weather by the time the New England Patriots and the New York Jets took the field, was still enough dampen any thrashing of the Jets by their division rival. Some five to eight inches fell in the overnight hours but the precipitation changed to sleet than to rain before game time. It was the wind that was the biggest factor, keeping both sides to mostly short gains and the running game. Pats QB Tom Brady had 14/27 passing attempts for 140 yards and 1 interception.

The Jets first quarterback, starter Kellen Clemens, made one passing attempt which resulted in an interception and went out with an injury after two plays. Chad Pennington kept the Jets in the game (mostly) but in typical Jets fashion, they missed numerous scoring opportunities to make up what was never more than a 10-point deficit during the game. Four Jets players had four fumbles, 1 for a turnover and they were miserable on 3rd down conversions, managing 3-14. A 35-yard field goal sailed wide left when the Jets could have brought the game within a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Both teams scored their first touchdowns on special teams. While New England wasn't the scoring machine it has been in other games this season, the one thing that it kept to its advantage was eating up huge chunks of clock during its possessions to essentially run out the game from 1 minute left in the second quarter.

Some (myself included) predicted this would be a blowout of epic proportions because it was Jets head coach Eric Mangini who ratted out the Pats head coach Bill Belichick for filming signals during their first meeting in week one. A sideline camera is against league rules and both the team and Belichick were penalized. Alas, all predictions were swept away in winds that pitched between 30 and 60 miles per hour during the game.

New England 20, New York 10 (Final)
