A new B-52's album is a rarity these days (unless you count re-releases and hits collections) so the release of Funplex
is notable on that score alone. No longer new wave, but still a party band, the B-52's have put together a solid collection of dance tunes from a tried and true formula they have been using for almost 30 years.
Funplex, the album's first single, is probably the best of the bunch, but there are plenty of songs that combine the electric harmonies of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson (Juliet of the Spirits) and the wise-cracking spoken word vocals of Fred Schneider (including Ultraviolet, with the refrain "There's a rest stop, let's hit the G-spot".) Deviant Ingredient shows off the band's pure party intentions as well as Love Shack did in 1989. Hot Corner and Too Much to Think About are hot and memorable singalong tracks.
The super slick production gives the entire set a consistent vibe. The effect is more of a non-stop dance mix than a collection of separate songs, but that's not a bad thing. The songs will probably meld well with their past hits. A perennial touring band, the B-52's have lined up club dates in spring and a spot on the True Colors Tour this summer to show off the new tracks.
